Why Musubi is a Popular Hawaiian Food

Musubi is a wildly popular food that is commonly enjoyed in Hawaii. Resembling the Japanese culinary favorite known as onigiri, musubi is made with a base of packed white rice topped with the meat or fish of your choice, wrapped around the midsection with a piece of seaweed. In Hawaii, the most popular musubi combination is one with SPAM, a type of canned cooked pork.

This unique Hawaiian dish is a result of the military troops’ relocation to Hawaii following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. SPAM was a main ration given to the troops thanks to its high-calorie content and long shelflife. Instead of eating it plain, the SPAM was placed on top of rice in an onigiri fashion. Once SPAM was available to the public, musubi really took off, and most grocery stores around Hawaii still stock this popular snack to this day.

Since the introduction of musubi following World War II, many different variations of the dish have been created. Instead of SPAM, some recipes call for chicken, vegetables, fish, or a thin omelet topping, all placed on a bed of rice and wrapped with seaweed (also known as nori). At L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in Plano, Texas, we love celebrating the various delicious and authentic recipes straight from the Hawaiian Islands. One of the most popular options on our menu is our musubi section, featuring a handful of unique spins on the classic SPAM musubi, including:

– Grilled SPAM Saimin

Aside from musubi, we also serve a large selection of authentic Hawaiian cuisine options. Some of the most popular menu items include our Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp, Grilled Teriyaki Salmon, Kalua Pork with Cabbage, and our Grilled Salmon Saimin.
